Dollywood's NightFlight Expedition Soars with Innovative Rocking Boat System
Dollywood's NightFlight Expedition is an innovative attraction that combines elements of motion simulators, roller coasters, and river rapids rides into one thrilling experience. Located in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, this ride marks a significant departure from Dollywood's typical lineup of family-friendly entertainment and high-speed coasters.
The ride takes place in the hangar of Hidden Hollow Aviation, where scientists Cora and Jasper Oakley have strapped their Bioluminator device to an amphibious aircraft. The goal is to detect bioluminescence, which is light emitted by living organisms, and follow it to Secret Lake, a mysterious water source believed to give the Wildwood Tree its glowing canopy.
The ride itself features Mack Rides' Rocking Boat system, which seamlessly blends elements of motion simulation, roller coasters, and river rapids rides. The experience begins with a large screen animation of the Oakley twins kicking off their journey, followed by a brief roller coaster section before transitioning into a river rapids scene.
Despite some operational issues, including breakdowns and water leaks in the queue, NightFlight Expedition is a triumph for Dollywood. The ride's unique blend of technology and theming makes it feel like a Disney or Universal attraction, but without the hefty price tag.
