Double Fine Acquires Full Ownership of IP, Including Psychonauts 2
Double Fine Games has acquired its intellectual property and publishing rights from Microsoft after a seven-year stint under the Xbox umbrella. The studio's CEO, Tim Schafer, confirmed that Double Fine now owns all of its IPs, including Psychonauts 2, Keeper, and Kiln.
Schafer clarified that some storefronts may still display Microsoft as the publisher due to processing delays, but this does not indicate a lack of ownership transfer. He emphasized that when people buy their games, it directly supports the studio.
The acquisition is a rare outcome in corporate divestitures, where studios typically leave without their catalog attached. Double Fine's return with full ownership intact gives them a stronger negotiating position as an independent studio.
