Double Fine Breaks Free From Microsoft
Double Fine Productions has regained its independence after parting ways with Microsoft. The studio's founder and head, Tim Schafer, announced this development on the Kinda Funny Games Daily podcast.
The acquisition by Microsoft in 2019 meant that Double Fine was no longer an independent studio. However, the departure from the Xbox structure in July 2026 marked a significant turning point for the team.
With their independence restored, Double Fine now has control over its entire catalog of games. This includes Psychonauts 2 and Keeper, among other projects developed while working with Microsoft.
The studio also plans to revive Amnesia Fortnight, an experimental event where developers create prototypes of new games.
