Double Fine Productions has regained its independence from Microsoft after the tech giant's recent layoffs. In an interview, CEO Tim Schafer confirmed that the studio has finalized its separation and now controls all of its intellectual properties (IPs). This means that Double Fine will have full control over its games, including publishing rights.

Schafer also mentioned that the studio is already working on new projects, with a free update for their multiplayer party game KILN in the works. Additionally, Double Fine has launched a new Kickstarter campaign called Amnesia Fortnight 2026, which will allow backers to contribute to the development of four game prototypes.

According to Schafer, buying any of Double Fine's games directly supports the studio and helps extend its 'runway.' This implies that the studio is in a better financial position now that it has regained control over its IPs.
