Dow Jones Stocks to Buy or Sell: MSFT Shines, WMT and PG Struggle
The Dow Jones (^DJI) is often seen as a benchmark for industry leaders, but not every stock in the index is a safe bet. Two stocks that investors may want to think twice about are Walmart (WMT) and Procter & Gamble (PG).
Walmart's large revenue base makes it difficult to increase sales quickly, with an annual revenue growth of 5.3% over the last three years below expectations for the consumer retail sector. The company also has a gross margin of 24.9%, which is lower than its competitors, and an operating margin of 4.2% that constrains its ability to invest in process improvements or respond to new competitive threats.
Procter & Gamble's organic sales performance over the past two years indicates it may need to make strategic adjustments or rely on mergers and acquisitions to catalyze faster growth. The company's estimated sales growth of 1.9% for the next 12 months is soft, implying weaker demand.
On the other hand, Microsoft (MSFT) is a market leader with impressive fundamentals. The company produces mission-critical software and bundles it together, resulting in high gross margins. Its elite unit economics lead to robust profit margins that improve over time, due to scale advantages and operating efficiency across its diverse portfolio.
