The Dow Jones index surged by over 600 points on Thursday, closing at 53,686.11 after Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller hinted that interest rates might be left unchanged this month.

This move was largely driven by a positive sentiment shift in the market, with the CNN Money Fear and Greed Index showing some improvement to a reading of 35, still firmly in the 'Fear' zone.

The ISM Services PMI rose to 55.4 in August, beating expectations, while initial jobless claims increased by 2,000 to 206,000.

Not all sectors performed well, however, with energy and materials stocks closing lower despite the overall market trend.
