Dow Plummets as Middle East Hopes Fade
US stocks plummeted for the third consecutive day on August 11 as concerns over Middle East stability waned. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped by 184.13 points, or 0.34%, to close at 53,791.85, while the Nasdaq Composite and S&P 500 fell by 171.04 and 26.25 points respectively.
The decline was largely driven by a lack of optimism regarding an agreement to ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. Speculation had emerged last week that Iran might ease transit restrictions, but expectations for any such deal evaporated by Monday. As a result, investors took a risk-off posture, selling off large-cap technology stocks.
Amazon and Alphabet, both major tech players, fell significantly, contributing to the broader market decline. The S&P Communication Services sector plummeted 2.12%, making it the worst performer among the 11 major S&P sectors.
