Dow Plunges as Middle East Tensions Spur Oil Price Surge and Rate Hike Bets
The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped by about 300 points on Monday to around 53,250 after US strikes on Iranian rocket launchers and subsequent retaliatory attacks by Iran. The escalation in tensions pushed crude oil prices above $85 per barrel, a more than 2% increase.
This surge in energy costs has led to higher Treasury yields, signaling tighter financial conditions. As a result, the Federal Reserve's rate hike expectations have risen to near 60%, with a target range of 3.75% to 4.00%
The Dow is particularly vulnerable to these rising borrowing costs due to its composition, which has only one energy member, Chevron, at just 2.2% weight, and no significant energy cushion.
