Dow Rises as Disappointing Jobs Data Eases Rate Hike Fears
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose slightly on Friday following the release of disappointing jobs data, which unexpectedly eased concerns about further rate increases.
The Dow was up 0.17% at 53,976.97 by 11:36 a.m. EDT, while the Nasdaq advanced 1.30%, outpacing blue chips.
The July payrolls decreased by 23,000, falling short of analysts' expected increase of 80,000. This development lowered the likelihood of a rate hike in September to roughly 20% from 55% prior to the report.
The Dow's price-weighted structure amplified the effect of the decline in Caterpillar's stock price, which pulled the index down by approximately 77 points, surpassing the joint 63-point lift provided by Nvidia and Salesforce. This masked stronger performance seen within technology stocks.
