Dow Surges Above 53,600 Amid Anticipation of Fed Chairman's Speech

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose above 53,600 as investors looked to Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's speech at the Jackson Hole Symposium for guidance on the central bank's economic outlook and strategy for bringing inflation back to target.

Warsh's remarks are being closely watched after his stance at the Fed's last policy meeting left investors uncertain about the central bank's near-term rate path. Treasury yields were little changed heading into the speech, with the 10-year yield remaining close to its multiyear high of 4.63%.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.1%, pulling back after a strong rally driven by Nvidia's earnings report, which saw shares surge 8.7%. The broader market backdrop this week has been shaped by technology strength and lingering macroeconomic caution, with some strategists warning that August and September have historically been seasonally weaker months for stocks.

Beyond the Fed speech, investors are also digesting a notable divergence in speculative assets, including Bitcoin and Cathie Wood's Ark Innovation ETF, which have each risen more than 20% in August. This pairing has only occurred four other times since the fund's launch in 2014, drawing comparisons to the market environment of late 2020 and early 2021.
