Dow Surges on Iran Peace Deal Hopes Amid Earnings Disappointment
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at a record high on August 5 due to optimism surrounding a potential peace deal between Iran and Oman. The proposed agreement would grant Tehran control over ships entering the Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz, a significant concession. This news helped boost oil prices and US Treasury yields, leading to a decline in inflation pressures and expectations for a rate hike from the Federal Reserve.
The S&P 500 recorded a slight decline on August 5, while the Nasdaq Composite saw its first decline in five sessions, dragged down by SpaceX and AMD's poor quarterly earnings. Despite this, the Dow was bolstered by gains in shares of Amgen, Disney, and other companies. The ADP private payrolls report showed slower growth in July, but the Institute for Supply Management's non-manufacturing purchasing managers index remained above the 50 threshold that signals growth.
Expectations for a rate hike from the Federal Reserve at its September meeting have dipped to 54.9 per cent, according to CME FedWatch. Minneapolis Fed president Neel Kashkari stated that he believes now is the time to start slowly moving interest rates higher.
