Dow Tumbles as Middle East Uncertainty Combines with Rising Interest Rates
U.S. stocks declined for a third consecutive session on August 18 due to uncertainty over the Middle East situation and rising global interest rates.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 116.38 points, or 0.22%, to close at 53,343.40, while the Nasdaq Composite dropped 355.20 points, or 1.33%, and the S&P 500 shed 53.30 points, or 0.69%.
Semiconductor stocks led the selloff, with the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index plunging 5%. Key players like Nvidia fell 2.3%, Micron Technology tumbled 7%, SanDisk slid 9%, and Western Digital lost 7.4%.
Escalating tensions between the United States and Iran also pressured investor sentiment, with Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf emphasizing that 'the Strait of Hormuz will not be opened until the United States implements all provisions of the memorandum.'
