Dow Tumbles as Treasury Yields Reach Highest Level Since 2023 Amid Rising Oil Prices
The Dow Jones Industrial Average plummeted by around 200 points to just below 52,400 as investors grew concerned about rising borrowing costs. The 10-year Treasury yield reached its highest level since 2023, surpassing 5%, which has significant implications for the stock market and housing industry.
With the average 30-year mortgage rate increasing to 6.76% from 6.15% at the start of the year, homebuyers are facing a substantial burden. This is particularly concerning for companies like Home Depot and Sherwin-Williams, whose sales rely heavily on the housing market.
The tech sector also suffered losses, with chip stocks declining due to AI-related concerns and the broader industry's slow-down in model development. Nvidia, the only major chipmaker listed in the Dow, dropped by around 3%, while other leading companies like Broadcom, Advanced Micro Devices, Intel, and Marvell Technology fell between 4% and 7%.
The rising oil prices following Saudi Arabia's pipeline shutdown added further pressure to the market. West Texas Intermediate crude oil surged above $103 a barrel, and Brent rose above $108, which is likely to exacerbate inflation and weigh on consumer-facing stocks.
