Dropout's Game Changer Gets Away With It: The 'Don't Wake Standards and Practices' Parody

On May 18th, Dropout's Game Changer premiered its eighth season with an episode called 'Don't Wake Standards and Practices', which featured a mock Disney, Star Wars, McDonald's, Coca-Cola, Bluey, and more.

The show's host, Sam Reich, welcomed Lou Wilson, Ally Beardsley, and Jeremy Culhane to the set, where they had to push the limits of comedy without crossing into legal danger zones. To determine what was too far, three 'legal eagles', Devin Stone, Alexis Noel, and Iya Baclagan, served as judges, awarding points and penalties.

Reich explained that Fair Use, a U.S. legal doctrine, allowed them to use copyrighted material for criticism, news reporting, educational purposes, or parody. He also acknowledged that the context of the episode, pushing legal limits, helped their case. The lawyers looked at the episode and decided they could keep everything as is.

Reich revealed that the 'legal eagles' were not actually Dropout's regular lawyers but were rather brought in for this specific episode. They found Devin Stone through his online persona, Legal Eagle, and Alexis Noel and Iya Baclagan through casting. Reich expressed confidence that Bluey creator Joe Brumm would be okay with the parody bit, given their past work relationship.
