Dutch-Nigerian Billionaire's 40-Year Business Empire Unveiled in Lagos Luxury Tower
Dutch-Nigerian billionaire Cornelis G. Vink has been quietly building his business empire in Nigeria for over four decades, but recent attention to one of his properties has shed light on his remarkable accomplishments.
Vink's company, Tropical General Investments (TGI), owns the 29-storey tower at 39 Bourdillon Road in Ikoyi, where Nigerian singer Burna Boy recently had a vintage Ferrari craned into his penthouse. The tower boasts luxurious amenities such as scenic elevators, private cinema, gymnasium, squash court, tennis court, spa, swimming pool, and underground parking.
TGI has grown significantly since Vink arrived in Lagos from the Netherlands in the 1970s, and he incorporated TGI in 1980. The company started importing Caprison juice but soon began manufacturing locally, a model that has been replicated across various sectors. Today, TGI owns more than 100 brands across multiple industries, including fast-moving consumer goods, agricultural inputs, industrial chemicals, home care products, and pharmaceuticals.
Vink's most notable deal was the sale of CHI Limited to Coca-Cola in 2019 for reportedly $1 billion. He also facilitated the acquisition of an 89.39% stake in Union Bank of Nigeria by Titan Trust Bank, a TGI subsidiary, in 2022. The acquisition was supported by Afreximbank's Intra-African Investment Financing Facility.
More recently, TGI entered into a joint venture with Reliance Consumer Products to manufacture and distribute everyday consumer goods at accessible prices across West Africa.
