Edge Drops Support for Legacy Browser Extensions by Early 2027
Microsoft plans to retire support for Manifest V2 browser extensions in Microsoft Edge by early 2027. This change is aimed at improving security and performance, as well as reducing risks associated with legacy extension code.
The company will begin the enterprise rollout of Manifest V3 in January 2027 and complete it by April 2027. During this time, users on Windows, macOS, and Linux platforms across various Edge channels will be affected.
Manifest files define an extension's capabilities, permissions, background processes, and other operating behavior. The newer Manifest V3 framework introduces stricter controls to limit potential security risks associated with older extensions.
