Edge of Field Partnership Showcases Conservation Practices in Central Illinois

The Edge of Field Partnership is hosting a free field day on August 13th to showcase edge-of-field conservation practices in Central Illinois. The event, which runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., will take place at the Cisco Event Center and feature live demonstrations of conservation drainage practices, presentations from industry experts, and an opportunity to see working installations.

Edge-of-field conservation practices aim to improve water quality by reducing nutrient loss as water leaves the field, according to Illinois Farm Bureau Environmental Program Manager Bena Pegg. Emerging technologies like automated drainage water management structures show promise for conserving both water and nutrients during high-flow events while also demonstrating potential yield benefits.

The Edge of Field Partnership is a collaboration among Illinois Farm Bureau, Illinois Land Improvement Contractors Association, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, the University of Illinois, Southern Illinois University, Ecosystem Services Exchange, and the Agricultural Drainage Management Coalition. The partnership was created to increase the adoption of proven edge-of-field conservation practices while evaluating their effectiveness on working farms.

During the field day, attendees will observe the installation of two woodchip bioreactors and one saturated buffer, as well as tour an existing automated drainage water management structure. Registration is requested but not required for attendance.
