Ethiopian Airlines Boosts Cargo Capacity with Boeing Freighters Order
Ethiopian Airlines is expanding its cargo operations with an order of up to 10 Boeing freighters, including current 777F aircraft and the newer 777-8F model. The airline already operates 12 Boeing 777 freighters, providing operational familiarity with the aircraft family.
The mix of 777Fs and 777-8Fs will help Ethiopian manage two different needs: near-term capacity growth and a longer-term modernization path. This matters because Boeing is moving between freighter generations, with standard 777F production facing emissions-related restrictions after 2027 and delays affecting the wider 777X programme.
The strongest case for more large freighters comes from Ethiopian Cargo's network model, which serves 70 dedicated cargo destinations and over 140 passenger destinations. This allows the airline to consolidate freight from several African markets through Addis Ababa, improving the economics of large freighters by combining demand from multiple markets onto the same long-haul service.
