Ethiopian Airlines Nears Cargo Plane Deal with Boeing Amid Production Delays
Ethiopian Airlines is close to signing a deal for up to 10 Boeing cargo planes, sources say. The order includes two of Boeing's current-generation 777F aircraft and could be made up by the delayed new 777-8F freighter model.
The move would help Boeing bridge a gap in production until the new 777X jets are certified. The U.S. planemaker has asked for a waiver to deliver more 777Fs, citing strong demand and delays in the certification of its successor.
Ethiopian Airlines operates a fleet of 147 jets, including 12 777F cargo planes and three Boeing 767 freighters. The airline is expanding its cargo capacity as part of plans for Africa's largest airport, which is expected to open in 2030.
