Ethiopian Airlines Nears Major Cargo Plane Deal with Boeing

Ethiopian Airlines is on the verge of a major deal with Boeing to purchase up to 10 long-haul cargo planes, sources say. The order would include two current-generation 777F aircraft, which are among the most widely used freighters in the world.

The deal comes as plans progress for a new African hub at Bishoftu International airport, which is expected to be one of the largest airports on the continent when it opens in 2030. Ethiopian Airlines has already signed lease agreements with AerCap for two Boeing 777-300ER passenger planes being converted into freighters.

Boeing's current-generation 777F has been a best-seller, but production is set to cease at the end of 2027 under international emissions rules. The US planemaker has asked the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for a waiver to continue delivering 35 additional 777Fs, citing strong demand and a delay in certification.

Ethiopian Airlines already operates 12 similar 777F cargo planes, as well as three Boeing 767 freighters and four converted 737s on medium routes. The airline is also considering Airbus's new offering, the A350F, which has been delayed until late September.
