Ethiopian Airlines Poised to Buy Up to 10 Boeing Freighters Amid African Hub Plans
Ethiopian Airlines is close to signing an order for up to 10 long-haul Boeing freighters, which would help bridge a gap in production until the delayed new 777-8F model becomes available.
The deal, likely to include two current-generation 777F aircraft, comes as the airline plans to establish a new African hub to compete with Gulf carriers.
Ethiopian Airlines already operates 12 similar 777F cargo planes and has been studying Airbus's new A350F offering. The expansion is part of a broader plan for Africa's largest airport, which will transport 3.7 million metric tons of cargo annually when it opens in 2030.
The order would also help Boeing bridge a production gap created by delays in developing the 777X family, including the new 777-8F cargo model.
