EU Orders Google to Share Search Data with Rival Engines
The European Union (EU) Commission has ordered Google to share anonymized search data with rival search engines under the Digital Markets Act. This move aims to create a more level playing field for third-party search providers, including AI-powered services like Gemini.
Google must provide access to features and data needed to improve their services by January 2027. The company will also be required to anonymize and share the same data it uses for its own services with eligible third-party search providers.
The EU Commission has developed guidelines for anonymizing the shared data, in collaboration with privacy experts and in line with the draft Joint Guidelines of the DMA and General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
