EU Seeks Publisher Feedback on Google Opt-Out Function
The European Commission is seeking to determine whether publishers will use Google's opt-out function for AI search, which was rolled out on August 31st. The move allows publishers more control over their content and aims to provide 'fair treatment, greater transparency and meaningful choice for businesses and consumers.'
However, some commentators have argued that opting out could lead to lower visibility for publishers. The EU's antitrust regulators are now seeking feedback from publishers through a questionnaire.
The European Commission launched an investigation into Google's use of online content for AI purposes in December 2025. As part of this ongoing investigation, the commission is examining whether Google imposes unfair terms and conditions on publishers and content creators, and places developers of rival AI models at a disadvantage.
