European Firms Rush Development of AI-Powered Wingman Drones
The development of 'wingman' drones, designed to accompany fighter jets, is underway by European and US firms. These AI-powered drones are being developed to complement manned aircraft with extra sensors, jammers, and weapons.
At the recent Berlin airshow, four companies - Airbus, Boeing, Helsing, and General Atomics - showcased their latest designs of wingman technology to Germany's military. Wingman drones, also known as collaborative combat aircraft (CCA), range in size from small interceptors to being as big as planes.
Germany and France have shelved plans for a joint fighter jet but are now focusing on developing a related drone system and data network. Boeing's MQ-28 Ghost Bat is expected to enter service with the German Luftwaffe by 2029, while Airbus' U760b Ravenstorm won't be available until the 2030s.
