Excel Experts Uncover Hidden Gems for Efficient Spreadsheet Work
For those familiar with Microsoft Office, but still discovering its hidden gems, Tony Phillips has identified three Excel tools worth exploring this weekend. These features can make everyday spreadsheet work easier and more efficient.
The first tool is Custom Lists, which allows users to create their own order for sequences in Excel. This feature is useful for creating custom lists of priorities or classifications that may not follow the standard alphabetical order. To create a custom list, go to File > Options, then open the Advanced menu and scroll to the General section. Click Edit Custom Lists, select NEW LIST, and enter the items in the desired order.
Once created, users can type the first word in their list into a cell and drag the fill handle down to repeat the sequence. This feature is particularly useful for sorting data according to custom logic, allowing Excel to sort data based on user-defined priorities or classifications.
The second tool is Excel's Camera feature, which allows users to capture a range of cells as an image that stays linked to the original cells. This can be useful for creating dashboards or reports where data needs to be displayed in a specific format. To use this feature, add the Camera tool to the Quick Access Toolbar (QAT) and select the cells to display.
Finally, users should explore Excel's Advanced Filter feature, which allows them to filter data based on custom criteria. This can be particularly useful for filtering large datasets or creating dynamic reports.
