The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has finally certified Boeing's new 737 Max 7 jetliner for commercial service, marking a significant milestone in the company's efforts to overcome years of safety and quality challenges.

The certification comes nearly a decade after Boeing first unveiled the plane, with the FAA requiring several safety changes before granting approval. These changes included updating flight-control software, improving cockpit alerts for pilots, and redesigning the engine anti-ice system to prevent overheating.

The 737 Max 7 is part of Boeing's 737 family of commercial jets, which has been at the center of its troubles. The plane will be used primarily on short- and medium-haul routes, with several carriers including Southwest Airlines having outstanding orders for the aircraft.

Boeing's president and CEO of Commercial Airplanes, Stephanie Pope, said that her team worked through challenges, an extended pandemic, and the transition to new certification processes to achieve this milestone. The FAA will continue to monitor Boeing's safety culture and manufacturing practices.
