FAA Clears Boeing's 737 MAX-7 After Decade-Long Review

Boeing's stock surged over 7% on Monday as the Federal Aviation Administration certified the company's 737 MAX-7 model, clearing it for flight after a nearly decade-long review. The FAA evaluated the MAX-7's flight controls, flightcrew alerting system, and system safety assessments.

The certification process was complicated by fatal crashes involving the larger MAX 8 variant in 2018 and 2019, as well as stricter safety standards imposed by the FAA. Boeing had to update its flight-control software, flightcrew alerting system, and engine anti-ice system, which was redesigned after concerns it could overheat in dry conditions.

The review of the MAX-7 faced further challenges following a 2024 Alaska Airlines door plug blowout, prompting Boeing to withdraw an exemption request for the MAX-7. The FAA also flagged 31,000 737 MAX seats for inspection due to improper installations that could lead to seat separation in emergencies.
