The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has ordered inspections of 1,429 Boeing 737 MAX jets worldwide after reports of cracks near the fuselage.

The FAA's directive requires visual inspections of the planes, which could take about an hour and cost $85 per plane.

The inspections are a response to concerns that the cracks could weaken the aircraft's ability to withstand limit loads.

Boeing says it has not observed any cracks in its MAX fleet but is extending the inspections as a precautionary measure, given the similarities between the MAX and older 737 NG models where cracks were reported starting in 2019.
