Fervo Energy and Google Sign Landmark Geothermal Deal

Fervo Energy, a next-generation geothermal systems builder, has signed a landmark agreement with Alphabet's Google. The deal is for a 396-megawatt (MW) power purchase agreement that will supply carbon-free energy to power a data center in southwest Utah.

The project, called Cape Station enhanced geothermal systems GeoCluster, is expected to go online in 2028 and will be supplied by Fervo's flagship system. Google plans to use the electricity to power its data center, which is currently being built in the area.

Fervo CEO Tim Latimer said that customers like Google need energy resources that can be deployed at scale, operate around the clock, and deliver where power is needed. The deal also includes an option for Google to purchase an additional 600 MW by June 2030, pending engineering feasibility studies and regulatory approvals.

The partnership between Fervo and Google began in 2023, with Fervo supplying power to Google's data centers in Nevada. With this new agreement, the partnership is expected to provide up to 1 GW of energy needs for Google.
