Fervo Energy Seals Record-Breaking Geothermal Deal with Alphabet
Fervo Energy (FRVO), a geothermal energy developer based in Houston, Texas, has announced a major deal with Alphabet (GOOGL), parent company of Google. The agreement is for a 396-megawatt power purchase agreement to supply carbon-free electricity for a potential data center in Utah.
The Cape Station project in southwestern Utah, which is expected to come online in 2028, will be the site of the new geothermal energy plant. Alphabet has the option to expand its purchase by 600 MW by June 2030, further increasing the deal's significance. Fervo CEO Tim Latimer stated that this agreement demonstrates Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) is ready to power the next generation of computing infrastructure.
The partnership between Fervo and Alphabet began in 2023 with a pilot project called Project Red, which aimed to deliver power to the local grid and Google data centers in Nevada. The deal marks a major step forward for geothermal energy as a reliable source of clean power for data centers.
