Fervo Lands Record-Breaking Deal with Google for Next-Gen Geothermal Power
Fervo Energy has secured its largest customer contract yet, signing a deal to supply Google with nearly 400 megawatts of clean electricity from its next-generation geothermal project in southwest Utah. The agreement marks a significant milestone for Fervo's Cape Station, which is investing over $2 billion to build what could become the world's largest such system when completed in 2028.
The first phase of Cape Station will deliver power at $7,000 per kilowatt, while the second phase should come in at $5,500 per kW, according to Fervo. The company expects to start generating test power from a 33-MW unit in the fourth quarter of this year and plans to have the full system up and running in about two years.
The deal with Google supports the buildout of the second phase, which is set to be operational by 2030. As demand for reliable electricity grows, Fervo CEO Tim Latimer noted that customers like Google need energy resources that can be deployed at scale, operate around the clock, and deliver where power is needed.
