Financial Giants Sound Alarm on US Stocks Ahead of Challenging September

Top financial institutions are advising caution on US stocks as they head into historically challenging territory. Wells Fargo & Co, led by chief equity strategist Ohsung Kwon, warns of 'broad cautiousness' heading into September due to growing concerns about the sustainability of the AI investment boom.

The team expects capital expenditure fears around the AI build-out to peak, but notes that their sentiment indicator remains more positive than negative after a mid-August sell-off. JPMorgan Chase & Co's trading desk, led by Global Head of Market Intelligence Andrew Tyler, has also shifted to a 'tactically cautious' outlook on equities for the next few weeks.

Meanwhile, Citadel Securities' head of equity and derivatives strategy Scott Rubner expressed concern about the path for equities over the next several weeks. He noted that upside catalysts are becoming less obvious while downside catalysts become more numerous.

Rubner is not calling for a bearish turn but rather a tactical reset in the near-term, remaining constructive on the long-term outlook for US stocks. Historically, September has been a tough month for the US stock market, with an average loss of 0.8% over the past three decades.
