Financials Sector Dominates List of S&P 500 Stocks at 52-Week Highs
As of last Friday, a total of 18 S&P 500 stocks were trading at their 52-week highs. The list is dominated by the Financials sector, with Asset Management & Custody Banks making up four names, and Diversified Banks and Regional Banks contributing two each.
The largest company on the list is Merck (MRK) with a market value of around $335.8 billion. However, the focus is not just on individual companies but rather what this clustering of financials implies about the current leadership in the market.
According to Trefis' Guidance Momentum screen, only 10 out of the 18 names are Financials stocks, with the rest belonging to other sectors. This concentration raises questions about whether the underlying business fundamentals justify the new, higher prices.
