Finland's Energy Security Tested by Google's $15 Billion AI Deal
Finland is on the verge of a significant transformation as Google plans to invest at least $15 billion in the country's artificial intelligence infrastructure over two years. This investment, which is Google's largest European commitment, includes a major nuclear power agreement and potential development of new renewable and nuclear generation.
The 22-year power purchase agreement between Google and Finnish utility Fortum will give the tech giant access to as much as half of the Loviisa nuclear plant's output. This deal not only extends the expected operating life of the plant until 2050 but also provides stable, low-carbon electricity for energy-intensive AI infrastructure.
However, this investment has sparked concerns about grid capacity and household energy affordability. Opposition lawmakers have called for national oversight of data centre approvals, grid capacity, and household energy affordability. Centre Party leader Antti Kaikkonen emphasized the need for a clearer view of the cumulative impact of new projects, suggesting that a national permitting system for new data centre investments would be necessary.
Prime Minister Petteri Orpo has maintained that electricity prices will remain under control, but Social Democratic lawmaker Niina Malm stressed the importance of examining the availability of electricity as a broader internal security issue. She pointed out that people must have enough energy and that it should be priced at a level they can afford to use.
