Firefighter Rescues Trapped Ducklings from Storm Drain on Way to Home Depot

A Pittsburgh firefighter's routine home improvement trip turned into an unexpected rescue mission after he spotted five ducklings trapped in a storm drain.

Matt Klein, a North Fayette Township Volunteer Fire Department member, was on his way to Home Depot when he noticed a frantic mother duck pacing near the storm grate. Upon further inspection, he discovered the five ducklings stuck at the bottom of the drain.

Klein quickly called for backup and, with the help of his colleagues, managed to rescue all five ducklings. Two were freed before the fire department arrived on scene, while three others required more assistance, one had to be flushed out 30 feet down a drain pipe using water from an engine.

The rescued ducklings were reunited with their relieved mother. According to the North Fayette Township Volunteer Fire Department, this type of call not only helps animals in distress but also provides valuable training for firefighters by requiring them to think creatively and utilize tools available on their rescue truck.
