Firefighter Saves Ducklings Trapped in Storm Drain

A North Fayette Township Volunteer Fire Department firefighter named Matt Klein was on his way to Home Depot for a home improvement project when he stumbled upon five ducklings trapped in a storm drain near Pittsburgh.

Klein noticed a frantic mother duck walking back and forth near the storm grate, which led him to investigate further. He saw that the ducklings were at the bottom of the drain and quickly called his colleagues from the fire department for assistance.

Two of the ducklings were rescued before the fire department arrived on the scene, while the remaining three required a bit more effort to retrieve. The last duckling was 30 feet down in the drain pipe leading to another catch basin, so it had to be flushed out using water from an engine.

The good news is that all five ducklings were safely reunited with their mother. According to the fire department, this type of rescue not only helps animals in distress but also requires firefighters to think creatively and use available resources to solve the problem.
