Microsoft Pen Not Working? How to Fix It in a Few Steps

If your Microsoft Surface Pen has stopped writing, refuses to charge, or lost its top-button shortcuts while the tip still works, follow these steps to fix it.

First, check the power and compatibility of your pen. Open Surface and find your paired pen among the accessories at the bottom to see its battery level. If your pen is Bluetooth-enabled, press the top button: amber or red means low power. For a no-clip Surface Pen, replace the AAAA battery with the positive end toward the tail.

If the problem persists, restart Windows and test writing elsewhere. Select Start > Power > Restart, then open the Windows Start menu and try writing in OneNote, Sticky Notes, or Paint after Windows starts.
