Florida Man Threatens Ex-Girlfriend in Chat Logs with ChatGPT
A Florida man was arrested and charged with aggravated stalking, written threats to kill, and illegal use of a cell phone after he threatened to murder his ex-girlfriend in chat logs with ChatGPT. Darren Zhou, a former Goldman Sachs analyst, used the AI to discuss his breakup with his 21-year-old girlfriend from Lake Worth Beach, but quickly turned to threats of rape, murder, and murder-suicide.
The messages showed a pattern of rehearsal and planning, according to investigators, who reviewed two months of Zhou's chat logs. The woman had previously broken up with Zhou over his 'erratic, jealous, and controlling behavior,' and had asked him not to contact her again.
Zhou continued to call and text his ex from various app-generated phone numbers, sending harassing, insulting, sexual, and threatening messages. Deputies arrested him in May after receiving the chat logs from OpenAI, who alerted the FBI due to Zhou's plans to harm others.
Zhou pleaded guilty to all three charges in August and was sentenced to eight years of probation, with a slew of restrictions, including not owning firearms or contacting his ex without permission.
