Foldables Face Off: Samsung Leads on Hardware, Google Chases on Value
The foldable phone market is heating up as Samsung and Google compete for dominance. Samsung has been refining its foldable lineup since launching the first Galaxy Fold in 2019, with three models released in 2026: the large-screen Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, the compact Galaxy Z Fold8, and the vertically folding Galaxy Z Flip8.
In contrast, Google fired back on August 20 with the Pixel 11 Pro Fold, its fourth-generation foldable. A direct comparison of the two devices highlights their strategic divergence: Samsung leads on hardware refinement and breadth of options, while Google is mounting its challenge on price competitiveness and dust/water resistance.
The Pixel 11 Pro Fold weighs approximately 239g, compared to the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra's 215g. The Pixel also has a thicker folded design at 10.1mm, versus the Galaxy's 8.9mm. While the Pixel offers IP68 dust and water resistance, its dedicated case protects even the rear of the hinge.
Samsung's advantage extends beyond the polish of any single device. The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra can display up to three apps in split-screen on the main display and layer pop-up windows on top, offering greater flexibility and multitasking capabilities.
