One of the most promising options is Proton Drive, which offers end-to-end encryption and allows users to control access to their files. Butler praises Proton for its commitment to user privacy and its seamless integration with other Proton services, such as email and calendar apps.

CryptPad is another alternative that stands out for its collaborative features, allowing multiple users to work on documents and spreadsheets together in real-time. Unlike Google Docs and Sheets, CryptPad doesn't require registration or tracking of user data.

For those who prefer self-hosting solutions, Nextcloud offers a robust platform for storing files, sharing folders, and accessing calendar and contact information from anywhere.

Last but not least, Peergos is the most secure option of all, boasting 'post-quantum' encryption that protects against even future attacks. While Butler notes that self-hosting can be complex, especially for those without technical expertise, he recommends Nextcloud to users who are already familiar with homelabbing or other self-hosting solutions.
