Franchise Dealers Face Perfect Storm as Consolidation Accelerates
Franchise dealers are facing unprecedented pressure in today's auto retail market. According to AutoTrust CEO Dave Mondragon, multiple trends are converging to squeeze dealer economics from both the inventory side and the consumer side.
Mondragon listed margin compression, rising capital costs, tightening consumer credit, and a widening vehicle affordability gap as key challenges. Private equity and public consolidators continue to invest heavily in auto retail, further widening the scale gap between large groups and independently owned stores.
AutoTrust's dealer-owned cooperative is built around collective leverage, allowing members to access economics they couldn't reach alone. The company united over 300 franchise dealers in its first year and expects to return $5 million in cash distributions to members in 2026, a figure projected to grow to $25 million next year.
AutoTrust's model combines the purchasing power of member dealers to negotiate better deals with vendors. This approach is similar to Home Depot's business model, which brought scale and pricing capabilities to small contractors and homeowners.
