French Press Association Challenges Google's AI Search Summaries

A French press association has filed a complaint against Google over its AI-generated search summaries, arguing that they use journalistic content without consent or compensation. The Alliance de la presse d'information générale, which represents French news publishers, is seeking stronger safeguards from the Autorité de la concurrence.

The alliance argues that publishers were not consulted before the feature was introduced and that its use of press content may conflict with commitments Google previously made concerning neighbouring rights. It wants the regulator to require negotiations over consent, transparency, and compensation.

Publishers fear that AI-generated answers displayed above conventional search links will reduce users' need to visit sources. Data published by the Reuters Institute indicates that Google Search referrals to news websites fell by around 33% globally between November 2024 and November 2025.
