From High-Society Wife to WNBA Champion Owner
Clara Wu Tsai is a Taiwanese-born businesswoman and former wife of Alibaba co-founder Joseph Tsai. Born in 1966 to a well-off Chinese-American family, she excelled academically, graduating from Stanford University with a bachelor's degree in international relations and a master's degree in international policy studies.
After working at American Express as Vice President for Asia, she met Joseph Tsai through family connections. They got married in 1996 and Clara joined Alibaba three years later, initially serving as an advisor and general manager of Hong Kong business.
The couple's acquisition of the New York Liberty WNBA team in 2019 marked a turning point in Clara's career. The team was in shambles, playing in a small arena with limited resources. However, Clara saw potential and invested heavily in transforming the team's infrastructure and operations.
