Frugal US Consumers Shift Spending Habits Amid High Gas Prices
US consumers are becoming more frugal, prioritizing essential purchases over discretionary spending. According to recent earnings reports from Walmart and Home Depot, middle-class Americans are directing their spending towards staples while cutting back on big-ticket items. Affluent shoppers, however, continue to support luxury brands like Ralph Lauren.
The trend is attributed to the impact of high gasoline prices, which has led consumers to make trade-offs in their spending habits. Retailers are responding by combining price cuts with stocking higher-end labels, such as Target's decision to expand its private label food brand Good & Gather while carrying premium items like Bugaboo baby strollers.
Despite the cautious consumer behavior, aggregate spending has not collapsed. In fact, Walmart raised its annual outlook, citing a strong back-to-school shopping season due in part to the presence of 'more elevated brands' and 'more expensive merchandise'. However, even Walmart is struggling to maintain average spending growth as consumers continue to visit stores but spend less per trip.
Home improvement retailers like Home Depot and Lowe's are also feeling the pinch, with consumers postponing larger renovations due to higher borrowing costs. The real challenge, according to Brian Jacobsen of Annex Wealth Management, would be a decline in traffic if there isn't some relief on budgets from high gasoline prices and interest rates.
