Gap Launches AI Checkout in Google Gemini
Gap has become the first major fashion retailer to integrate its checkout process into Google Gemini, allowing customers to complete purchases using AI chat. The integration is made possible through the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), which was launched by Google in January.
The move marks a significant shift in how consumers shop online, moving away from traditional ecommerce sites and towards autonomous systems. Gap's Chief Technology Officer, Sven Gerjets, stated that 'these partnerships are about solving real customer problems -- helping shoppers feel confident about fit and making it easier to complete a purchase.'
The integration will enable customers to browse Gap's catalog, get styling recommendations, and complete checkout in Google Gemini AI Assistant. The retailer has also launched an AI-powered fit tool, which uses personalized fit guidance from Bold Metrics' Agent Sizing Protocol to help customers avoid returns due to incorrect sizing.
