Gemini AI Lands on Windows Desktop
Google has released a Windows desktop version of its Gemini AI technology, allowing users to access tools like image generation and AI search directly on their computer. The company had previously released a similar app for Mac in April and has been updating it with new features.
The new app can be launched by pressing Alt and the spacebar on Windows, and users will have access to various AI models depending on their paid Google subscription tier. For instance, Gemini Spark, an AI agent software, is only available to users 18 or older with a Gemini AI subscription.
In testing, we found that using a paid, non-AI Google Workspace account gave us access to Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite, 3.6 Flash, and 3.1 Pro, as well as an 'Extended thinking' toggle for complex problem-solving. The app also uses Nano Banana for image generation and allows video generation with a Google AI subscription using Gemini Omni.
The design of the app is familiar to users of other AI chat apps like Claude or OpenAI's ChatGPT, with a left sidebar for chats and a search bar as the main interface. Users can create notebooks for group chats and access documents or media in the Library section, which can be connected to Google Docs and Gmail.
Google has stated that it will continue to roll out new features for the desktop app over time.
