Gemini Desktop App Transforms into Superapp with New Features
Google's Gemini desktop app is transforming into a superapp, according to recent updates. The latest changes include a toggle that allows users to switch between Ask and Assign modes, similar to Codex and Claude Desktop. Ask presents the standard Gemini interface, while Assign operates like Gemini Spark with expanded capabilities.
The Assign feature enables users to choose the folder in which Gemini operates, setting a default folder or selecting a new one for specific tasks. This keeps the agent within a particular scope. Additionally, users can connect to other computers running Gemini desktop, potentially enabling remote control features.
Two notable integrations are currently being tested: computer use and Obsidian connections. Computer use allows users to tag the skill and trigger local app tasks from Gemini desktop. The Obsidian integration is unclear in its purpose, but it could indicate a broader knowledge base concept or an internal tool for Google.
