Gemini Takes Over Google Messages Without Consent

Google's AI assistant, Gemini, has been rolled out to various services, including Gmail, Chrome, and Google Drive. The latest instance of this is the AI's integration into Google Messages, where it shows up as a shortcut above the Start chat icon.

This has led to concerns about user control over Gemini's functionality and access to personal data. While some users may appreciate the convenience of having Gemini in their messaging app, others prefer not to have the AI's presence without explicit enabling.

To disable the Gemini shortcut in Google Messages, users can follow these steps: open the account menu by tapping the profile icon in the top right corner, then head to Messages settings > General. From there, toggle off the Show Gemini button under the Gemini in Messages section. This will remove the shortcut from view, but it's essential to note that this doesn't completely remove Gemini's functionality from the Google Messages app.
