Germany Eyes MQ-28 Ghost Bat for Unmanned Combat Capability
The German military is exploring the possibility of using the Boeing MQ-28 Ghost Bat as a potential path to build its own unmanned combat capability. This move comes as air forces worldwide are transitioning from concept to development on Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) programs.
Boeing and Rheinmetall believe that the MQ-28's existing maturity could allow Germany to skip developing a new aircraft from scratch, instead focusing on integrating German sensors, weapons, and mission software. The MQ-28 has already undergone flight testing and demonstrated potential for both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions.
Glen Ferguson, Global Director of Boeing Defense Australia's MQ-28 program, noted that while many CCA programs are still in the concept or early testing phase, the MQ-28A Ghost Bat has completed essential development steps. Germany could use the platform to develop tactics, training, and operational structures for manned-unmanned teaming.
Rheinmetall is establishing an independent MQ-28 systems integration capability in Germany, with support from Boeing, Rohde & Schwarz, Diehl Defence, and HENSOLDT. This domestic industrial network will aid software development, mission integration, and other sovereign capabilities.
