Ghana Teams Up with Shell, Chevron on South Deepwater Tano Block Exploration
Ghana has taken another step forward in its oil and gas sector by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Shell, Chevron, GNPC, and Explorco for the South Deepwater Tano block.
The MoU covers exploration and production rights over the 3,482 sq km block in the deep-to-ultra-deepwater Tano Basin off Ghana's Western region. The block has a hydrocarbon potential estimated at more than 3 billion barrels.
Shell and Chevron will join forces with GNPC and Explorco to appraise the existing discovery and pursue the block's wider exploration potential. Energy minister John Abdulai Jinapor referenced the signing in his address to Africa Oil Week 2026, saying 'Today we are going to sign another milestone agreement to advance our oil and gas sector.'
